ReplyDeleteThe second article seems to suggest that the transfer of genes from one bacteria to another (horizontal gene transfer) can explain all the genetic diversity (including antibiotic resistance). Here's a lovely experiment detailing how E. coli evolved a completely novel trait, the ability to metabolize citrate, in a single population after 33,000 generations of mutations. The inability of E. coli to metabolize citrate is an identifying characteristic of the species, so this is a really neat example of a major evolutionary change. :)
